About thefuneral.ai

thefuneral.ai offers free tools and guides for families in the United States who are planning a funeral, writing an obituary, or working through the practical steps after a death.

What we offer

  • AI Planning Assistant — answers questions about arrangements, burial and cremation, typical costs, the FTC Funeral Rule, death certificates and veterans' benefits, and can list funeral homes near a city or ZIP code with their Google ratings.
  • Obituary Writer — turns your answers to a short questionnaire into two or three draft obituaries, written only from what you share.
  • Guides — articles on funeral costs, choosing a funeral home, VA burial benefits, grief, memorials and digital legacy.

Everything is free. The AI tools need a free account; the guides are open to everyone. We do not sell personal information — see our Privacy Policy.

How the AI tools work

The Planning Assistant and Obituary Writer use large language models, guided by our own reference material on US funeral practices, consumer protections and benefits. The assistant is instructed not to invent funeral home names, phone numbers or prices; funeral home results come from Google listings, and prices always have to be requested from each home. If a conversation shows signs of crisis, the assistant points to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

The Marketplace link in our header leads to Eternal Dream, a funeral home marketplace from the same team, for families who want to compare license-verified funeral homes and itemized prices online. The assistant may mention it once as an option; calling homes directly and asking for their price lists works just as well.

AI answers are general information, not legal, financial or medical advice. Laws, benefits and prices vary by state and change over time, so confirm important decisions with the funeral home, the relevant agency or a licensed professional.

How our guides are written

Guides are written and maintained by the thefuneral.ai editorial team. Where a guide gives figures — VA burial allowances, typical funeral prices — we take them from primary sources such as VA.gov, the Federal Trade Commission and National Funeral Directors Association surveys, and update them when those sources change. Each guide shows the date it was published and, after a factual revision, the date it was updated.

Articles marked Community were submitted by readers through our "Write for Us" form and are reviewed by our team before they are published. They are credited to the person who wrote them.
